Hydroxyproline

Hydroxyproline is an important amino acid necessary for collagen synthesis. It makes up 10% of all collagen amino acids. “It is used as a marker for collagen protein in tissues when studying its quantity.” A slight increase in hydroxyproline in the dermis leads to significant proliferation (growth) of fibroblasts.

Ascorbic acid is necessary for the hydroxylation of proline. Hydroxyproline is responsible for the stability of collagen.

Hydroxyproline easily binds with water, so an increase in its concentration in the stratum corneum of the skin raises the level of moisture and protective fx/ also contributes to the synthesis of ceramides.

Other minerals necessary for collagen synthesis include iron, zinc, and copper, indirectly.

Copper is a trigger for the enzyme involved in collagen synthesis. Dietary sources of copper include offal, spirulina, mushrooms, and sesame seeds.

Speaking of dietary supplements that promote the synthesis and stabilization of collagen by increasing hydroxyproline in tissues, these include:

  • collagen supplements, especially with shark fin
  • natto with sesame oil
  • vitamin C
  • magnesium in the ratio of Ca+Mg 2:1
  • zinc DHC

Cosmetic skincare products may contain acetylhydroxyproline in their formulations. Such care works very well on skin with a compromised protective barrier, dehydrated skin, and skin with a fine-wrinkled type of aging. Typically, such care provides quick results in the form of plumped and hydrated skin:

In the formulations, hydroxyproline is referred to as “Acetylhydroxyproline,” which has excellent transdermal absorption ability and moisturizing properties, promotes fibroblast proliferation and collagen production.
