CICA – “the magical elixir of life” will help owners of any skin type.

Curious to learn more about this substance? Below is an article based on research by Dr. Megan O'Brien – a consulting dermatologist for Kiehl's and dermatologist Dr. Frances Zhang from Dermapure in Vancouver.

Centella Asiatica or abbreviated as CICA – a perennial plant that grows in the marshy areas of Asia. It has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

“The plant is most commonly used for healing burns and wounds, preventing and treating scars, and inflammatory skin diseases,” writes dermatologist O’Brien.

In recent years, it has gained popularity in the beauty industry, and it’s not without reason. Cica is often found in Asian beauty products, and it is referred to as a miraculous ingredient that has soothing and healing properties, which allows it to act gently even on the most sensitive skin.

INTERESTING FACT

Not only humans benefit from the advantages of Centella Asiatica – it is known that tigers rub their wounds against this plant, hence another of its names "tiger grass".

Cica has a long list of beneficial properties that improve the condition of the skin.

In addition to reducing inflammation and strengthening the skin barrier (the outer layer that regulates moisture levels and protects against external stress factors, such as pollution, for example), one of its main advantages is that it helps increase collagen production in the skin, which naturally decreases with age.

The anti-inflammatory properties of Centella Asiatica make it an ideal treatment for eczema and psoriasis flare-ups.

An increasing number of studies show that Cica has many other benefits, such as helping to balance oily and acne-prone skin, while not clogging pores + reducing the percentage of stretch marks during pregnancy

Is Cica safe for all skin types?

– For owners of dry and sensitive skin, such products will help to retain moisture inside for a longer period and keep the skin hydrated and firm (due to increased collagen production in the inner layers of the skin) + will reduce the appearance of reactions and inflammation as a result of environmental influences.

– For oily or combination skin prone to inflammation, such care will help to establish and regulate the production of sebaceous glands and accelerate the healing of acne and rashes.

– Such cosmetics also protect the skin from UV rays, photoaging, and combat pigmentation spots.

Products containing Cica are suitable for both young skin and will be absolutely indispensable when it comes to combating age-related skin changes (loss of elasticity, the appearance of “crow’s feet”).

How to best incorporate skincare products containing Cica into your daily routine?

Dermatologists O’Brien and Zhang recommend using Cica both in the morning and in the evening. Currently, the shelves of cosmetic stores are filled with products containing Centella Asiatica, from which you can choose according to your taste and color for everyday use. However, doctors recommend looking for products that contain at least 5% of this ingredient – as it has been proven that such a concentration of the substance significantly increases the level of skin hydration.

Both dermatologists recommend choosing rich, balm-like moisturizers to maximize the benefits of this ingredient.

In the winter period, in regions and countries where winter is very frosty, cold, and windy – Centella Asiatica will be a wonderful addition to any skincare routine, helping to relieve irritation, dryness, and “chapped skin.” However, due to its property that promotes collagen production, it will be beneficial to use it throughout the year, not just in the cold months.

On the labels, we recommend looking for the words: cica, centella asiatica, gotu kola, tiger grass, or madecassoside (an active compound of the plant extract).
